Mt Buninyong Walk/Ride

MT BUNINYONG WALK/RIDE (10.8 km walk or 12.3 km ride)

Mt Buninyong to Olympic Avenue

Mt Buninyong is an ancient volcano. You start with a steep descent for both walkers and bike riders on separate tracks from the peak’s car park. Koalas, wallabies and kangaroos might be seen in the reserve. Buninyong village was established in 1841 and is Victoria’s oldest inland post-contact settlement, pre-dating the gold rush by a decade.

The Walk/Ride has a distinctly English feel about it. There are splendid bucolic views, drystone walls, old churches and the pretty Gong Reservoir. Walkers cross the Buninyong Botanic Gardens with trees selected By Baron Von Mueller in 1866.

Leaving the cafes of Buninyong village, the track heads uphill beside the busy Geelong Rd, passing the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University. The University Circuit Walk offers a 4.1 km easy circuit of the Mt Helen Campus, within easy walking distance of the Goldfields Track. A copy of the map is freely downloadable.

The Mount Buninyong Walk/Ride finishes at Olympic Avenue in Mount Clear. The Canadian Creek Walk/Ride commences here with walkers and riders taking different routes towards the Ballarat CBD.
