Early in 2011 DSE closed the Lerderderg Track between Jubilee Lake and St Leonards Hill following storm damage. The track is still closed. GDTA has repeatedly requested that the track be reopened. At a meeting with DSE Midlands District in November 2011 the GDTA asked DSE to take urgent action to reopen the track.

DSE have advised that only DSE posts are allowed on their land. This means that on the Lerderderg Track between Jubilee Lake and Blackwood, DSE will replace all green GDT posts with grey DSE posts.

Wallaby Track

Buninyong to Daylesford
92km walk traversing the Great Dividing Range between Daylesford, Creswick, Ballarat and Buninyong

Wallaby Track

This track, previously known as the Federation Track, now including the section from Ballarat to Buninyong, crosses the top of the Great Dividing Range between Ballarat and Daylesford, and is now known as the Wallaby Track. It comprises the southernmost section of the Goldfields Track, now open to both walking and mtb cycling.

The Great Divide also marks the boundary of two Aboriginal Nations - the Djadja Wurrung to the north and the Watha Wurrung to the south.

Commemorating the Centenary of Federation, the former Federation Track acknowledged the contribution of the trade union leader W. G. Spence to the formation of Federation. Spence was brought up in a slab and bark hut near Creswick and rose to become the first president of the powerful Shearers Union and a founding member of the first Federal Australian Parliament. At the time of Federation in 1901, the area was one of the most densely settled mining and rural areas in Australia.

It was oficially renamed the Wallaby Track by Steve Moneghetti in November 2006 to coincide with the addition of the Ballarat - Buninyong section, and in recognition of the characterisic Black Wallabies found along much of the forested parts of the track . The new 'Wallaby Track' map also includes the new 20km of track from Ballarat to Buninyong. It is available for sale via GDTA for $7.50 each and at Visitor Information Centres).
